Character 101 really began in 1948, that is when Sally Bruton, her brother Paul and her parents, J. Paul and Helen Bruton landed in Lagos, Nigeria. She was a young, red-headed little girl who would live 16 years in various African countries. Joel Vann and Sally Bruton married in 1971. In 1972 they moved to Nairobi, Kenya and began working in partnership with the people of Africa. Today they are partnering with the Tanzanian people, providing humanitarian and educational resources to children and teachers in government and private primary schools.
In 2012, Character 101 became a coalition partner of Character Counts (The Josephson Institute) founded by Michael Josephson and based in Los Angeles, California. Permission was granted to Character 101 to adapt Character Counts materials to teach ethical lessons to children in Tanzania. Capturing the minds of young children with the principles of good character will have a positive impact on the children and the culture.
